John Bernbaum, a member of National, is the founder and president of
the Russian-American Institute (RAI). He and a group of
educators from Russia and the United States responded to a call from
the Russian Ministry of Education in 1992 to develop an institution of
higher learning that offered regular degree programs but also training
in religion, morals, and ethics. RAI began its operations in
1995 by offering non-degree courses in literature, business, and
English. Its principal programs now lead to undergraduate degrees in
business/economics or social work. RAI received its full accreditation
from the Ministry of Education in 2003 and is affiliated with a variety
of U.S. colleges and higher education associations. Students are taught
by resident faculty and guest lecturers from the U.S. and other Western
countries (see Student
Life)
Although there are now active seminaries and Bible schools in
Russia, RAI remains the only Christian liberal arts university in the
country. Nearly all students leave the university with training in the
use of computers and with effective English language skills. The
University endeavors to place its students in private and public sector
positions in Russia where they can be a positive influence on their
society, setting the example for being capable, hard-working,
compassionate, ethical employees and community leaders (see RAI Graduate Interview).
RAI has been successful in placing its business/economics graduates in
Russian and international firms, and the need for RAI graduates with
social work skills is growing.
Facade of RAI's new building. |
NPC members are active with RAI in a variety of ways (see Initiatives). RAI is
growing, and NPC’s help will be important for RAI as it develops and
moves into its new facilities (see New Campus).
