February 2020 Lunch-and-Learn

On February 9, 2020, the Building Up the Global Church Subcommittee in conjunction with the Moldova Mission Network hosted long-time NPC friend Reverend Valeriu Ghiletchi and his colleague from Parliament Reverend Ion Groza. Senior Pastor David Renwick and Associate Pastor Joyce Emery hosted Valeriu at Pathway Moments for National’s three services, and Valeriu and Ion talked at luncheon afterwards how God had led them in their careers as pastors and as Members of Parliament.

Ion noted that his parents had both been orphans and talked about how this relationship had given him a special inspiration to help orphans himself, both as a pastor and government official. He noted that the Baptist Church in Moldova had set up 15 homes with the help of a German foundation for Christian couples to serve as foster parents for orphans.

Valeriu spoke about how God had protected him as a student and young adult because he would not join the age-appropriate Communist organization as he grew up. He noted the “motto” his parents had imparted of “Do your best, and let God handle the rest!,” which he said had remained good guidance as an adult during the times he was founding UDG, serving as Bishop of the Baptist Church, and serving in Parliament.

David Renwick talks with Valeriu about life and ministry in Moldova.

The previous evening, friends of Moldova at NPC and other churches hosted Valeriu and Ion at the home of Gene and Nancy Thompson. The group enjoyed a lengthy discussion about orphans, church life in Moldova, and the political situation there.

September 2019 program

On September 16, the Building Up the Global Church sub-committee and the Moldova Mission Network invited Key’s UDG Development Director Paul Beech and UDG Academic Dean Mihai Malancea and Moldova Mission Network (MMN) Representative Sylvia Mader to update the NPC audience on recent UDG ministry activities.

Illness prevented Paul Beech from attending in person as planned, so David Wallace and Phyllis Wolfe interviewed Paul and Mihai via Skype. Paul Beech discussed how UDG in partnership with Keys Ministries is working in Central Asia and about UDG’s new Asia Mission Initiative, particularly UDG’s plans to partner with other mission organizations in UDG’s Asian outreach. Paul and Mihai commented on ways that NPC professionals in medicine, construction, and education could assist UDG as short- or long-term volunteers.

Paul and Mihai talked as well about the growth in UDG student population, recent developments in academic programs at UDG, and Keys Ministries’ general work in local Central Asia Muslim communities. Mihai talked about his newly published book on Christian presence in the Muslim world and on engaging those communities.

Sylvia Mader had to be out of town for a family emergency, so MMN President Howard Tucker- Frost provided Sylvia’s presentation to the group about their May trip. Howard talked about Sylvia’s and her team’s work with UDG student in reaching out to orphanages and about Sylvia’s team’s work in talking with older orphans about anti-trafficking measures.

Dr. Kathy Arveson discusses activities of the Building Up the Global Church team, where UDG is located in NPC’s mission structure.

David Wallace talks with Paul and Mihai about persecution of Christians in Central Asia and about UDG’s programs to train students from that region to share the Gospel effectively.

Howard talks about Sylvia’s work in Moldova and the various schools and orphanages the Moldovans maintain.

David Wallace and Phyllis Wolfe talk about UDG’s program for social work and NPC’s earlier support through the Shaw Grant.
